The Department of Medicine at NUHS has a long history of excellence in patient care, education and research. Our NUHS Internal Medicine Residency Programme reflects these strengths. Our programmes are designed to ensure that training takes place in settings that are respectful of residents' needs and capable of delivering patient care efficiently, effectively and safely.
We have configured a host of programmes that integrate training in clinical competence, academic scholarship, critical thinking and personal development. Our programmes will help you achieve mastery of clinical medicine and prepare you for the contemporary practice of medicine. We emphasise protected teaching and the principle of graded responsibility for patient care to enable our residents to become independent physicians.
Our programmes offer broad-based training in General Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Nephrology, Dermatology, Intensive Care, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology, Haematology, Hepatology, Oncology, Geriatric Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine and Palliative Medicine. Training is conducted at the major hospitals within the NUHS Cluster under the watchful eyes of our dedicated faculty members. Residents will spend time at National University Hospital (NUH), Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) as well as Alexandra Hospital (AH).
Our goal is to create an optimal educational and clinical environment in Internal Medicine that help our residents achieve excellence in clinical performance, competence and personal development.

No. We are looking for individuals who are interested in the Internal Medicine subject matter and who are able to handle the rigor of our high tempo training within a three-year programme. This is because the programme places great emphasis on ensuring that trainees achieve clinical competencies expected for an internist prior to the commencement of sub-specialty training. Hence, we do not penalise candidates for the lack of extra-clinical achievements. Individuals with a strong clinical foundation and who are interested in academic pursuits (e.g. research or education) can be groomed and supported to do so later during their time in-training instead.
The application for senior residency has always been a highly competitive field and the number of positions will change year-to-year depending on the demands of our healthcare system. Our programme focuses on what we can control, that is ensuring that every resident fulfils our clinical training requirements at the time of graduation. Trainees are then armed with a strong foundation to cope with the demands of SR-ship. Achieving these high standards also mean that our residents have been able to secure training positions in all sponsoring institutes (SIs) island wide on the grounds of merit, regardless of external circumstances.
"I am very grateful to have been a part of NUHS Internal Medicine Residency Programme. Residency training has helped us to hone our clinical skills while emphasising on the importance of professionalism and compassion. I enjoy coming to work daily knowing that I would be constantly challenged with the diverse and yet ever-evolving pathologies as we prepare for the future.
I feel blessed to have an approachable faculty who believes in us and gives us the autonomy as we progress in our knowledge and confidence. The monthly to three-monthly rotations through the various sub-specialties have provided us with the perfect balance to explore and develop our interests while equipping us with core skills to deal with emergencies.
Prided on the strong foundation of education and research, the programme offers a great mixture of hands-on experience and didactic teachings as we grow as physicians.
Residency is undoubtedly challenging and there are days when I feel worn out, however, I always feel supported with great mentors and teammates whom I know I can always count on in these trying times.
My experience thus far has been enriching and I look forward to continue training and growing in this giving and happy environment. "
