Respiratory Therapist

Respiratory Therapists specialise in providing care and treatment for patients who have lung and breathing-related problems. They work closely with doctors to assess, monitor and treat patients with asthma, pneumonia, lung conditions that cause shortness of breath (emphysema), lung injury, and those who are struggling to breathe optimally due to other medical conditions.

Respiratory Therapists manage the use of ventilators and implement various treatments such as providing oxygen and giving medication to the lungs. They also monitor response to treatment, measure the lung function of patients and with critical procedures such as inserting airway tubes to assist with breathing or performing lung scopes for diagnosis and treatment. They also educate patients and their families to aid their understanding of the disease process and treatments administered.
