NUHS General Surgery Residency Programme

Objectives

The University Surgical Cluster (USC) at NUHS comprises 14 specialties including Breast Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Multi-organ Transplant Surgery.

The availability of comprehensive services ensures that residents will receive broad-based training providing them with competencies in several subspecialty areas in Surgery. Through broad-based training in the common trunk of the NUHS General Surgery Residency Programme, residents will be well prepared to specialise in other programmes such as Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Hand Surgery, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery, and Urology, all of which are available at NUHS.

Every specialty in Surgery has leaders in their respective fields who are accessible, approachable and are outstanding teachers.

Rotations

The USC has established comprehensive infrastructure and unique initiatives to train, teach and develop state-of-the-art care for patients. These include the Advanced Surgery Training Centre, Initiative for Research and Innovations in Surgery (I.R.I.S.), Medical Engineering Research & Commercialisation Initiative (MERCI), basic science laboratories and comprehensive databases.

The programme in General Surgery is designed to provide a combination of clinical experience, didactic teaching and ample opportunities for research. Several residents have received opportunities to pursue a Masters programme (MPH/MCI) during their residency training.

Our goal is to train future academic surgeons of the highest professional, ethical and academic standards.

Testimonial from our General Surgery Resident

Dr Tiffany Gan

Dr Tiffany Gan, NUHS General Surgery Residency Programme, 2018 Cohort

"The last four years in the NUHS General Surgery Residency Programme has been a great experience. There have been many opportunities for hands-on experience and mentorship from a great team of supportive faculty. This is especially essential given the rigour of surgical training.

The residency training encompasses rotations to different institutions within NUHS, all of which have unique training opportunities, diverse patient population and enthusiastic faculty. This makes for an excellent environment to train and gain surgical experience.

In addition, the unique thing about the programme is the abundant opportunities for research exposure, including a research month where there is a wide array of research exposures to engage in and can be a great eye-opener. This should be a consideration, especially if there is interest in the further pursuit of research while undergoing surgical training."
