Biosketch

Dr Sharon Tan is a Consultant in the Division of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, National University Hospital.

Dr Sharon Tan graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS). She was conferred the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) Ireland followed by the NUS Master of Medicine (MMed) in Orthopaedic Surgery during her course of Orthopaedic Surgery training. She completed her specialist training as one of the top 3 performing surgeons and was admitted in the Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) Edinburgh in Orthopaedic Surgery. She now practices in National University Hospital as an Orthopaedics surgeon.

Dr Sharon Tan enjoys working with children and specialises in Paediatric Orthopaedics. Her main interests and expertise include Paediatric Orthopaedic trauma surgery, deformity correction, sports injuries and foot and ankle surgery. 

In a bid to further the clinical expertise in her field, Dr Sharon Tan is involved in multiple research projects. Her research efforts have been recognised in multiple platforms, including being awarded the Young Orthopaedic Investigator Award in 2021, National University Health Systems (NUHS) Residency Research Award in 2020 and Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association Young Surgeons Forum Best Paper Award in 2018. She has also obtained multiple competitive grants to further the research in her field, including the National Medical Research Council New Investigator Grant Award in 2018, NUHS Innovation Grant in 2020 and NUHS Pitch for Funds Awards in 2019. She has published more than 50 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and has spoken in more than 20 international conferences to date.

Apart from pursuing clinical excellence, Dr Sharon Tan is also involved in multiple leadership roles through her career, including being nominated to be the Chief Resident in NUHS Orthopaedic Surgery, and being in the Singapore Chief Residency Programme and NUHS Residency subcommittee. She is also involved in the organisation of multiple hospital-wide events such as NUHS Educators Day. 

Dr Sharon Tan is also involved in both undergraduate and post-graduate education and academic training. She is appointed as a clinical faculty by NUS and is involved as both a tutor and examiner in undergraduate and post-graduate training. Her excellence and passion in teaching has also been recognised in 2020 where she was awarded the NUS Medicine Special Recognition Award for Clinical Educators.
