Adj A/Prof Fareed, Head, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Medicine in 1995 and has been in public service since. He completed his orthopaedic training and was awarded the most outstanding orthopaedic trainee in 2002. Further clinical subspecialty training in Orthopaedic trauma was obtained in Leeds (UK), Hannover (Germany) and Lucerne (Switzerland) between 2004 and 2006.
After 8 years of practice at National University Hospital (NUH), he joined NTFGH in 2010. As Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, NTFGH since 2018, he was given a second appointment as Group Chief, Orthopaedic Surgery for the National University Health System (NUHS) since 2019.
His major area of clinical practice include surgery for complex fractures, management of patients with multiple injuries (polytrauma), limb lengthening and reconstructive surgery for infections or non-union of the bone as well as correction of bony deformities. He also practices general adult orthopaedics focusing on hip and knee joint replacements (including robotic assisted surgery) and knee arthroscopic surgery. He has received Service Quality awards in 2013 and 2017 for his patient-centric care.
In NUH he was involved in the setup of the ‘Fix & Flap’ program for open fractures with the Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery (HRM) department, introduced the use digital templating software (TRAUMACAD) as well the use of Reamer Irrigator Aspirator (RIA) for bone grafting.
In NTFGH, as clinical champion of the Hip Fracture Integrated Care Pathway (ICP) Committee, he set up the standardised management of hip fractures, including risk screening and post-operative rehabilitation providing value driven outcomes. While chairing the NTFGH’s Operating Theatre Committee, he was also involved in the setup of the operating theatres as well as the paperless Epic (OPTime) electronic medical record (EMR) system.
One of Adj A/P Fareed’s passions is teaching. He has received the Dean’s Award for teaching excellence (2011), Orthopaedic Teaching Excellence Award (2012), Best Resident Supervisor Gold Award (2016), NUH Teaching Excellence Award (2016) and NUHS Teaching Excellence Awards (2021).
Besides being extensively involved in setting standards and curriculum, he has regularly organised and examined in multiple undergraduate and post-graduate examinations in orthopaedics both locally and overseas. His previous and current leadership positions in committees include the Staff Registrar Scheme Diploma in Orthopaedic Surgery, Master in Medicine (Orthopaedics) Committee with the Division of Graduate Medical Studies (National University of Singapore) and the Orthopaedic Surgery Exit Examinations Committee. He was also previously a Chairman of the Singapore Council of AO Trauma Asia Pacific (a non-profit foundation for the improvement in orthopaedic trauma care) and past Chairman of the Chapter of Orthopaedic Surgery, College of Surgeons.
