What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a mental health condition that affects one's perception of reality.

It includes one or more of the following symptoms:

  • A reduced level of social functioning
  • Blunted or inappropriate affect
  • Changes in perception due to hallucination
  • Changes in thinking due to delusion
  • Cognitive function might be affected in the early stage
What are the signs & symptoms of Schizophrenia?

Symptoms of Schizophrenia include delusion, hallucination, disorganised thoughts and/or speech, reduced motivation and/ or taking initiative-taking compared to baseline state. There might be gross reduction in spontaneity, speech and engagement with loss of interest and reduced pleasure in normally enjoyable activities.

What are the treatment options for Schizophrenia?

The treatment of Schizophrenia includes use of medications.

Blood investigations and brain scans are sometimes performed to exclude medical conditions affecting the brain.

Hospitalisation might be necessary for patients who are at risk of harm to self or others, or for close monitoring and treatment.

Rehabilitation of Schizophrenia includes referral to community rehabilitation services.
