Genu Varum or Bowing of the Knee is a condition where the legs curve outward at the knees such that when standing, the knees do not touch.
This may be caused by:
There may be an obvious gap between the knees when standing with the feet together, which may affect one or both knees.
X-rays will help determine the severity of the condition.
Surgical options include temporary tether of the normal outer growth plate at the knee in a younger child, or a permanent tether in an older child.
For an older adolescent who has stopped growing, a cut in the bone for realignment may be necessary.
If left untreated, the deformity of the knees may worsen with time.
