Dr Lin studied medicine at the National University of Singapore, and specialised in medical microbiology, obtaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 1994. He also studied at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he obtained an MSc with Distinction in 1991. Dr Lin started his career in clinical microbiology at the Singapore General Hospital, then headed the clinical laboratory at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital before joining the National University Hospital in 2004. He formed the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) under the Ministry of Health in 2007 and built it into a comprehensive national facility to support surveillance and outbreak investigation of communicable diseases. Other key contributions include being advisor to the Biosafety Branch of the Ministry of Health, Chair of the medical testing committee for accreditation under the Singapore Accreditation Council, and Deputy Chair of the Genetic Modification Advisory Committee. He teaches at the National University of Singapore where he holds a conjoint appointment in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
