Chairman, Medical Board, NTFGH
Clinical A/Prof Low Shiong Wen is the Chairman, Medical Board of Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH). As the founding and current Head of Division of NTFGH’s Division of Neurosurgery, he was instrumental in setting up the hospital’s neurosurgical service.
He obtained his Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery from the National University of Singapore (NUS). He underwent General Surgery post graduate training and went on to obtain the postgraduate General Surgical qualifications: Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) from the United Kingdom in 2007, and Masters in Medicine, M.Med (Surgery) in 2008.
He spent two years in Advanced Neurosurgical training with the Neurosurgery Department at Cambridge University Hospital (Addenbrookes Hospital), Cambridge, United Kingdom (UK), as part of the Ministry of Health (MOH) Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) Fellowship Award. Headed by Professor John Pickard, the department is the one of the top neurosurgical centres in the UK for clinical excellence and research. He specialty interests include neurotrauma, neurooncology and degenerative spine surgery.
Nationally, he contributes his time as the Vice Chairman of the Chapter of Neurosurgeons, Academy of Medicine of Singapore. and also as a Mediator for Ministry of Health Holdings (MOHH).
He holds a Bachelor of Laws with Honors, LL.B (Hons) from the University of London, and has a keen interest in the area of medico-legal issues. With the knowledge, he contributed his expertise as the Vice Group Chairman Medical Board (Clinical Governance and Medicolegal) at the National University Health System (NUHS) cluster, which he served.
Previously as Vice Chairman, Medical Board (Patient Experience & Culture), NTFGH, he set up the NTFGH Patient experience and Culture Steering Committee to strategise and operationalise efforts to achieve patient experience and culture improvement goals.
Known for being a stellar educator, he is a recipient of the NUS Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2016 and 2018, the NUHS Teaching Excellence Award in 2018, and the 2019 Residents’ Choice Award – Interactive and Engaging Tutor Award. He also received the NUHS Mochtar Riady Pinnacle High Achiever Award in 2019 and the COVID-19 Resilience Medal in 2022.
