Mr Hsieh Fu Hua will pass the leadership baton to Mr Tan Chong Meng after close to a decade of dedicated service championing healthcare innovation and collaboration
SINGAPORE — The National University Health System (NUHS) will usher in a new chapter of leadership in 2025 as Mr Hsieh Fu Hua steps down as Chairman on 31 December 2024.
Following nearly a decade of dedicated service on the JurongHealth and NUHS Boards since 2016, with the last five years at the helm, Mr Hsieh will be succeeded by Mr Tan Chong Meng, the current Deputy Chairman of the NUHS Board, with effect from 1 January 2025.
A transformational leader
Mr Hsieh’s tenure as Chairman is marked by his dedication to advancing healthcare innovation and collaboration. His clarity of vision has steered NUHS through significant milestones. Notably, Mr Hsieh’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic positioned NUHS as a trailblazer in delivering care beyond hospital walls and other transformative efforts.
As concurrent Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National University of Singapore (NUS), Mr Hsieh’s dual chairmanship at NUHS and NUS has forged a close and strategic partnership for research-driven healthcare addressing real-world challenges. This has led to multidisciplinary collaborations with significant public health impact.
Beyond healthcare and academia, Mr Hsieh is also Chairman of the World Wide Fund for Nature Singapore (WWF-Singapore), and Honorary Advisor of the National Gallery Singapore. In recognition of his diverse contributions to public service, Mr Hsieh was conferred the Distinguished Service Order in the 2024 National Day Awards.
Professor Yeoh Khay Guan, Chief Executive, NUHS, said, “Fu Hua’s astute stewardship has shaped the cluster into the strong integrated academic health system it is today. His collaborative and strategic leadership leaves a lasting impact on our mission to promote a healthy community, shaping medicine and transforming care.”
Leading healthcare with purpose
Taking over as Chairman is Mr Tan Chong Meng, a seasoned leader with extensive global experience. Mr Tan joined the NUHS Board in 2011 and has served as Deputy Chairman since December 2022.
Formerly the Group CEO of PSA International and currently Chairman of JTC Corporation, Mr Tan is also a Board Director of Temasek Holdings and a member of the NUS Board of Trustees since April 2024. He was sworn in as a member of the Council of Presidential Advisers in June this year.
As Co-Chair of the Emerging Stronger Task Force, a committee set up by the Singapore Government during the pandemic, Mr Tan was instrumental in guiding Singapore’s economic recovery. He also led the Community Care Facilities Taskforce, which converted a series of large-scale non-medical venues into Community Care Facilities, to preserve hospital capacity for critical cases. In recognition of his contributions, Mr Tan was conferred the National Meritorious Service Medal (COVID-19) in 2022.
A steadfast supporter of union rights, Mr Tan also received the Singapore’s National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) Medal of Commendation (Gold) in 2023 for his significant contributions towards the labour movement.
Mr Hsieh said: “Being a part of the NUHS journey has been profoundly meaningful. Healthcare is not just about systems and structures; it is about the people. Serving alongside the dedicated Board and colleagues at NUHS has been a privilege, and I am confident that under Chong Meng’s thoughtful and purpose-driven leadership, NUHS will continue to advance its mission of delivering exceptional care and driving innovation in health.”
Mr Tan shared: “Fu Hua’s exemplary leadership has been instrumental in shaping NUHS into a forward-looking institution, and his legacy will endure as we continue to advance care and improve health for patients. I look forward to building on this strong foundation and serving with colleagues at NUHS.”
