Research Objectives


To serves as a platform for the interaction and collaboration of scientists, clinicians and industrial technologists in the fields of beneficial microbes (probiotics) and prebiotics.

Research Highlights


In 2009, the LAB Interest Group organizes the following activities:


  1. Organized the 5th Asian Conference on Lactic Acid Bacteria: Microbes in Disease Prevention & Treatment.  The conference was attended by 312 participants from 11 countries, and all together 180 scientific papers were presented.  A Handbook of Probiotics and Prebiotics edited by members of the LAB Interest Group and published by the John Wiley & Sons Publication was launched at the conference.
  2. Initiated an Asian wide consortium to spearhead collaborative research in gastrointestinal microbiome among Asian.  The first phase of the study to standardize the protocols and to test the logistic in cross border research involved 12 cities.
  3. Initiated a cross institutional research project on the “Study of the role of gut microbes, westernized diet and chronic inflammation in the development of common bowel disorders” in Singapore.  It involves researchers from seven departments in the NUS, NUH, SGH and Gleneagles Hospital.
