National Research Foundation - Ministry of Health Healthcare Research Scholarship (PhD)

This Scholarship is opened to clinicians who are Advanced Specialist Trainees or final year Basic Specialist Trainees, who have the desire to pursue a local/overseas PhD degree in clinical and translational research, and would like to further their career as Clinician Scientists.  

 

Types of Support for PhD Programmes  

(i) Local PhD Programme

(ii) Overseas PhD Programme

 

Research scholar may choose to pursue a full-time PhD degree either from a local or overseas institution.

  

1. Local PhD Programme


Eligibility

The NUS PhD scholarship is open to final year Basic Specialist Trainees and Advanced Specialist Trainees who are Singapore citizens or foreigners who are committed to take up Singapore citizenship.



Components of Award

• Salary and tuition fees for the full-time academic study of up to 4 years,
• Conference support of up to $4,000 per year during the PhD studies,
• Allowance of two clinical sessions (8 hours) per week to maintain clinical competence while in PhD programme,
• Protected time of 30% (12 hours) per week for research during the clinical training years,
• Eligibility to apply for a research seed funding upon completion of PhD Programme, of up to S$30,000 (subject to the approval of a research proposal)

 

     

    2. Overseas PhD Programme


    Eligibility

    The overseas PhD scholarship is open to final year Basic Specialist Trainees and Advanced Specialist Trainees who are Singapore Citizens only. It will only be awarded for areas in which our local institutions do not have the expertise in the area of research to provide the training.


    Components of Award

    • Salary, tuition fees, maintenance allowance, return air tickets and insurance, for full-time academic study of up to 4 years
    • Conference support of up to $4,000 per year during the PhD studies
    • Allowance of two clinical sessions (8 hours) per week to maintain clinical competence while in PhD programme
    • Protected time of 30% (12 hours) per week for research during the clinical training years
    • Eligibility to apply for a research seed funding upon completion of PhD Programme, of up to S$30,000 (subject to the approval of a research proposal)

    Application Procedures

    Please submit 2 hardcopies (1 original and 1 copy) and softcopy of the following documents to Geetha Baskaran/Sherline Tay NUHS Research Office (Level 11, NUHS Tower Block, 1E Kent Ridge Road) by 2 Nov 2011.

     

    Documents:

     

    A) Application form - to be endorsed by the Institution's Head of Department.

    B) Copy of Singapore National Registration Identity Card.

    C) Letters of appointment/employment contract and information on your latest remuneration package (e.g., salary, bonus, annual wage supplement).

    D) Details of Research Project under the following headings: Introduction, Aims, Hypotheses, Methodology and References.

    E) Information on optional/mandatory courses to be taken, if applicable.

    F) Document(s) detailing fee structure for PhD or Master's training (if applicable).

    G) Declaration by OHR (ANNEX I).

     

    Letters From:

     

    H) Institution's Chairman of Medical Board

    Written commitment that the scholar will have a minimum of 30% protected time for research upon the scholar's return from his/her training.

    I) Head of Department

    Letter of recommendation that includes Department's commitment to provide continuing oversight for the scholar's training.

    J) Research Supervisor (during period of award)

    Letter of undertaking and curriculum vitae (to include a record of research funding & a record of past and current fellows trained.)

    K) Research Mentor (after period of award)

    Letter indicating commitment to mentor scholar upon scholar's completion of the training award and curriculum vitae (to include a record of research funding & a record of past and current fellows trained.)

     

    Applicants are advised to apply to the university of interest for their degree programme concurrently with this scholarship application to avoid delay in commencement of training
