HEH Lunchtime Talk: Smartphones - Friend or Foe?

Mr Dion Lo Zhen Yu
Psychologist
Department of Paediatrics

Synopsis

There often exists a love-hate relationship when it comes to children’s usage of smartphones. Some applications provide access to information and aid learning. Others aid children in planning and organising. Most importantly, smartphones can help fulfil basic psychological needs such as enabling children to connect and socialise with their peers. However, there are also concerns regarding the negative impact of phone addiction on relationships and cognitive performance. Is a healthier and happier relationship with smartphones possible?
