Specialists

Senior Consultant / Consultant / Associate Consultant

As an Associate Consultant / Consultant, you would have completed your Basic and Advanced Specialist Training and with successful accreditation by the Specialist Accreditation Board and entry into the Singapore Specialist Register, you will be looked upon to lead and guide medical staff at all levels, including teaching and training.

 

Non-Specialists

Resident Physician

As a Resident Physician, you will provide first-line clinical coverage in medical departments within NUHS.

 

Registrar

As a registrar, you guide the medical team, including House Officers and Medical Officers and provide expert medical care to patients.

 

Medical Officers (MO) / Clinical Associates (CA)

Medical Officers / Clinical Associates are qualified doctors who are immediately responsible for the total management of patients in the wards. They are required to help House Officers in the clerking of cases and supervise/help them in the performance of procedures. MOs / CAs who wish to be trained as specialists may apply to the Joint committee for Specialist Training (JCST) in one of the 14 basic specialties.

 

 

We offer 5 career tracks for you to share your inspirations towards innovative development of patient services, healthcare and learning environments.

 

The tracks are distinguished by their focus and time allocation on the clinical, research and teaching missions of NUHS. Doctors on all the clinical tracks should have completed specialist training, and be accredited as specialists by the Singapore Medical Council and the Specialist Accreditation Board.

 

The 5 tracks are:

1. Clinician

The clinician’s main effort is in clinical service. Clinicians lead the drive for clinical excellence, with safe, effective and cost effective outcomes. They are also expected to contribute in undergraduate and postgraduate training, and provide patients and materials for research.

 

2. Clinician Educator

The clinician educators' main roles will be in clinical service and education. They will contribute substantially to the latter. Clinician educators will have roles in coordination of student teaching, student internship programme, simulation training and postgraduate teaching and mentoring. Beyond teaching students and postgraduates, clinician educators will also lead in educational scholarship such as development of modules, curriculum, assessments and teaching methodology.

 

3. Clinician Investigator

The clinician investigators' main roles will be in clinical service and clinical research. The clinician investigator should be a recognized institutional resource person for clinical research, lead in design and carrying out of clinical trials, and contribute to mentorship of undergraduate and postgraduate research students.

 

4. Clinician Scholar

The clinician scholar's main role will be in scholarship of clinical sciences. Their work in teaching and research are ideally related. They will maintain a substantial clinical load. In the area of research, they must also be able to lead in publications, securing of grants, patents, mentorship and supervision of postgraduate research students. They are also required to obtain educational scholarship - development of modules, assessments, and teaching methodology.

 

5. Clinician Scientist

The clinician scientist's main effort will be in leading research programmes. The research may be laboratory based or clinical but all will contribute to NUHS' translational medical research mission. They are expected to maintain some clinical practise in order to ensure that their research continues to be relevant.

 

 

All Specialists will have a Clinical Appointment: Associate Consultant, Consultant or Senior Consultant. Clinical appointments and promotions will be based on clinical competency. Academic Appointments such as Instructor, Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors and promotions will be based on Teaching and Research achievement.
