Professor Quak Seng Hock is Professor of Paediatrics, National University of Singapore and Senior Consultant Paediatrician at National University Hospital (NUH). He is also Head of the Division of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and sits on various national advisory committees spearheaded by the Ministry of Health, Singapore.


Prof Quak is highly respected in local and international paediatric gastroenterology and hepatology communities. He has been President of the Singapore  Paediatric  Society,  Founder  President,  College  of Paediatrics and Child Health, Singapore and President of the Asian Pan Pacific Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. He has also been Chairman, Chapter of Paediatrics, Academy of Medicine, Singapore and Council Member of several regional and international associations of paediatric gastroenterology and nutrition.


Prof Quak is the champion behind building one of the best regional paediatric gastrointestinal and hepatology centres, complete with the ability to perform liver transplantation at NUH. From the first paediatric liver transplant in 1984 in Singapore, Prof Quak and his team have steadily built a liver transplantation programme that is comparable to the best paediatric liver transplant centres in the world.


A well-respected teacher and mentor, Prof Quak has taught many young paediatricians and paediatric gastroenterologists who have gone on to have illustrious careers. His commitment to medical education of doctors goes beyond the shores of Singapore. He has trained clinical fellows from the region who have gone home to build their own programmes and participated in many international teaching courses and workshops for the transfer of knowledge and practical endoscopic skills to doctors in Asia and South East Asia.


Prof Quak has played an important role in paediatric postgraduate education  as  a  member  of  the  Specialist  Training  Committee  and member of the Residency Advisory Committee for Paediatric Medicine, Ministry of Health. As member of the Education Committee of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, he has provided useful guidance in the development of the Staff Registrar Scheme for Paediatrics.


Beyond his clinical and teaching achievements, Prof Quak is an accomplished clinical researcher, contributing significantly to clinical trials on infant formula, Hepatitis B vaccination, liver transplantation, H pylori infections and many others.


As senior member of the medical profession, Prof Quak has been enthusiastic in sharing his experience in professionalism and ethics with the medical fraternity. For several years, he has been member of the Complaints Committee of the Singapore Medical Council as well as Senior Advisor to the NUH Medical Board to assist in medicolegal matters.


For his outstanding and long-time contribution towards the development of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Professor Quak Seng Hock is awarded the Emeritus Consultant Award 2013.
