Dr Jason Phua was recently appointed to lead the Division of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (RCCM).  He has taken on the leadership mantle to develop and inspire the team to achieve the vision of being Asia’s leading centre of excellence for respiratory and critical care medicine.

Dr Phua has been instrumental in leading multifaceted and multidisciplinary projects to drive key clinical initiatives. These include collaborating more closely with the Emergency Department for early and aggressive management of severe pneumonia and severe sepsis, and expanding the programme for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with a greater emphasis on smoking cessation and pulmonary rehab. For his clinical excellence in the Non-invasive Ventilation Programme, Dr Phua and his team were awarded the National Medical Excellence Team Award in 2010.

Dr Phua’s skill as a teacher is well recognized. He received the UMC Award for Excellence in Post Graduate Teaching three years in a row, from 2010 to 2012. He is also active in research, leading efforts to improve the practice of intensive care medicine and the outcomes of critically ill patients through collaborative clinical research in Singapore and beyond.  He was instrumental in building a national ICU registry and setting up the Asian Critical Care Clinical Trials Group to facilitate the translation of research findings into improved care in intensive care units.
