Associate Professor Quah Thuan Chong

Senior Consultant, Department of Paediatrics

"Unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required"

Associate Professor Quah is one of those special teachers who have left an indelible mark on his students. A model clinician educator, he has nurtured many successful clinician-scientists. A/Prof Quah is also a keen educator who encourages a safe learning environment for trainees at different stages of their training and motivates self-directed learning.

A firm believer in equal education opportunities for all, he has initiated the development of a structured 2-year training programme to complement the initial one-year clinical fellowship for deserving candidates to be well equipped with the essential skills. This provided adequate and comprehensive training to foreign trainees planning their return home to start independent practices in the specialty. This eventually morphed into the second paediatric sub-specialty Diploma endorsed by the College in Paediatrics and Child Health, Academy of Medicine Singapore.

A/Prof Quah has also been involved in several significant clinical programmes such as the first bone marrow transplant in Singapore and the first employment of high-dose Cyclosporine therapy in Singapore. As the Head of the Division of Paediatric Haematology-Oncology, he has led the Singapore team to initiate international collaboration, an example of which is the MASPORE clinical trials that have resulted in significant improvement in the cure rates for children with acute lymphobastic and myeloid leukaemia.
